Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an essential part of traditional Chinese medicine, a comprehensive system of health care with a continuous clinical history of over three thousand years. Chinese medicine includes acupuncture, Chinese herbology, and bodywork, dietary therapy and exercise based on Chinese medicine principles. These therapies work with the natural vital energy inherent within all living things to promote the body’s ability to heal itself.

How does Acupuncture work?

Chinese medicine is based on an energetic model rather than the biochemical model of western medicine. The ancient Chinese recognized a vital energy behind all life forms. They call this energy Qi (pronounced chee). In developing an understanding of the prevention and cure of disease, these healing practitioners discovered that this energy flows in pathways, or meridians. Each meridian is associated with particular physiological system and organ. Disease is considered to arise due to an imbalance of energy in the meridians and their associated physiological systems.

Acupuncture points are specific locations along the meridians. Each point has an effect on the vital energy running through it. Modern science has been able to measure the electrical charge at these points, thus confirming the meridians that were mapped out by the ancient Chinese.

Traditional Chinese medicine uses an intricate system of pulse and tongue diagnosis, palpation of points and meridians, medical history and other signs and symptoms to create a Chinese medical diagnosis. A treatment plan is then decided to re-establish balance and optimal health.

What can I expect with Acupuncture?

Many conditions may be alleviated very rapidly by acupuncture and Chinese medicine. However, some conditions that have that have been long-standing will be relieved only with slow and steady progress. As in any form of healing, the patients attitude, diet and lifestyle will affect the outcome of a course of treatment. Patients are encouraged to actively participate in their healing process and will be given many recommendations.

Although Chinese medicine can treat most conditions, there are circumstances that can be dealt with more effectively by Western medicine. In such cases, your acupuncturist will recommend you contact a Western medical doctor. Chinese medicine can be a wonderful compliment to Western medicine.

Is Acupuncture safe?

In the hands of a comprehensively trained acupuncturist your safety is assured.

Acupuncture needles are sterile and immediately disposed of after each treatment. Practitioners at Sage Wellness Center are both state and nationally licensed, and follow very strictly all health and safety requirements.

Is Acupuncture painful?

Acupuncture needles are very fine and flexible, about the diameter of a human hair. In most cases, insertion by a skilled practitioner is performed without discomfort. You may experience a sense of heaviness or electricity in the area of insertion. Most patients find the treatments very relaxing and many fall asleep during the treatment. In most cases a mild massage is performed before and/or after the insertion of the acupuncture needles. This not only is quite enjoyable and soothing for the patient, it also enhances the effects of the acupuncture points that are used.

How do I know if Acupuncture really works?

The World Health Organization recognizes acupuncture and traditional Chinese meridians ability to treat over 43 common disorders including:

How do I find the right acupuncturist for me?

Chinese medicine is a complex form of medicine that has been practiced in several countries around the world for thousands of years. As a result there are many schools of thought and traditions within the profession. In order to obtain the best health care, you should seek a practitioner who has been comprehensively trained and is currently licensed to practice. In addition, many acupuncturists go on to attend additional trainings, as well as study with “masters” in specific areas of specialty. Licensed acupuncturists in California are physicians and primary health care providers. Most acupuncturists will offer a complimentary consultation so that you may discuss your case and explore treatment before having an actual session.

Besides Acupuncture what else does Chinese Medicine consist of?

Moxabustion is a method where an herb called “Moxa” (Artemesia Vulgaris) is burned over acupuncture points. The heat warms the Qi and Blood in the channels and useful in the treatment of diseases and maintenance of health. It is commonly used for chronic, weakened conditions. It is also beneficial to treat channels that are “obstructed or blocked” by cold and damp. It can stimulate the circulation of Qi and Blood and eliminate pain. Asthma, diarrhea, arthritis, rheumatic pain, abdominal pain, and certain gynecological disorders are among the most common diseases for which moxabustion is indicated.

Cupping is another therapy where glass cups are suctioned onto the body and left for a period of time, usually about 10-15 minutes. This suction increases the movement and passage of Qi and Blood. It is excellent for acute pain or injuries-as well as opening areas where circulation is sluggish.

Herbal Medicine and acupuncture go hand and hand- together they can be an incredibly powerful therapy. There are about 400 herbs in the Materia Medica. Several herbs are combined to treat the patients whole system. The philosophy of these formulas is to eliminate the cause of the ailment by putting the body back in balance, not to merely mask the symptoms. At Sage Wellness Center we are lucky to have an herbal pharmacy which allows us to customize herbal prescriptions for each patient.
